Situated in the heart of modern-day Iran lies the forgotten ancient city of Persepolis. This remarkable archaeological site, built over 2,500 years ago, was once known as the wealthiest city under the sun. Persepolis served as the capital of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, the largest empire the world had ever seen. However, after its destruction by Alexander the Great's troops, the city and the lives of its builders were largely erased from history for nearly 2,000 years.

It was not until the excavations of the 1930s that the relics, reliefs, and clay tablets offering insights into Persian life could be extensively studied for the first time. Through these archaeological findings, ancient texts, and the work of a new generation of historians, a clearer picture of this remarkable civilization and its capital city has emerged. Although the city had been destroyed, the legacy of the Persians survived, even as they remain relatively enigmatic to the West, not as well understood as the Greeks, Romans, or Egyptians.

When considering the rulers of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, two names often stand out: Xerxes, the leader of the Persian invasion of Greece that led to the heroic sacrifice of the Spartans and their allies at Thermopylae, and Cyrus the Great, the man who established the Persian Empire. However, the accomplishments of Cyrus and the defeats of Xerxes would not have been possible without the critical role played by another king: Xerxes's own father, Darius the Great.

Darius I took the throne after the death of Cyrus's son, Cambyses II, and though his reign built upon the foundations laid by Cyrus, Darius proved himself equally worthy of the epithet "the Great." Reigning for over 35 years, Darius maintained control of the vast Persian Empire despite numerous rebellions and uprisings. He also implemented reforms and improvements that ushered in the empire's golden age. Darius followed Cyrus's example in his foreign policy and mode of kingship, offering tolerance and patience to diverse cultures and religions, and even treating his enemies fairly in most cases.

Darius's ultimate success can be seen in the smooth transition of power at the end of his life. Despite his unexpected death, his kingdom was so firmly established that the kingship passed to his son Xerxes without any question or upheaval. Under Darius the Great's rule, the Persian Empire reached its greatest geographical extent, stretching from the Indus Valley and Central Asia in the east to Libya and the Danube River in the west.

The majority of surviving sources regarding the Persian rulers are the product of Greek writers, and as a result, Darius has often been depicted in unflattering terms for thousands of years. The details of his invasion of Greece cast him as the villain in the dramatic Greek retelling of the Greco-Persian Wars. However, a more balanced and nuanced understanding of Darius's character can be derived from the few ancient sources, particularly Herodotus, that have explored the true complexities of his reign.
